The story behind Baisakhi / Vaisakhi

Baisakhi falls when the Sun enters Mesha and is the harvest festival of Punjab and Haryana, when the rabi wheat is cut. For Sikhs it carries a second and larger meaning: on this day in 1699 Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib, and it is observed with Nagar Kirtan, Amrit Sanchar and the reading of the Guru Granth Sahib. Hindu households keep the same day as a solar new year with bathing in rivers and dana. Bhangra and gidda are danced in the cut fields.

    Bathe at dawn, traditionally in a river or sarovar, marking the solar transit into Mesha.

    Offer water to the rising Sun facing east, and give grain from the new harvest to those in need.

    Visit the gurudwara for the kirtan and langar, or the mandir for the day's puja, according to your tradition.

    Offer the first grain of the new harvest before it is eaten, then share the festive meal with the community.
