The story behind Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya falls on Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya. Akshaya means that which does not diminish, and tradition holds that anything begun or given on this day does not run out. It is counted as one of the abujha muhurtas, auspicious in whole without calculation, and is remembered as the day Bhagwan Krishna gave Draupadi the akshaya patra, and as the appearance day of Parashurama. Its older sense is agricultural — the start of the sowing season — and the giving of grain, water and shade is the observance the texts emphasise.

Akshaya Tritiya Puja Vidhi

    Snana & Sankalpa

    Bathe before sunrise, ideally in flowing water, and take the sankalpa for the day's dana.

    Vishnu-Lakshmi Puja

    Worship Bhagwan Vishnu with tulsi and Maa Lakshmi with lotus and kamalgatta, offering a naivedya of sattu, barley or yellow rice.

    Jal & Anna Daan

    Offer water, a clay pot, a fan, an umbrella, sattu, barley or seasonal fruit to a person in need — the classical dana of this tithi, all of them things that ease the coming summer.

    Shubharambha

    Begin what you have been putting off — sowing, study, a new ledger, a new undertaking — since no separate muhurta is required on this day.

Meaning

The twelve-syllable mantra — salutations to Bhagwan Vasudeva, who pervades all.
