The story behind Masik Shivratri
Masik Shivratri falls on the Krishna Chaturdashi of every month, the night before Amavasya, when the moon is at its faintest and Shiva is worshipped through the midnight hour of Nishita Kaal. The great Mahashivratri of Phalguna is the annual form of this vrat; the monthly observance keeps that same discipline through the year. The Shiva Purana holds that those who keep every Masik Shivratri with a night vigil are freed from fear and granted a peaceful mind.

Day Fast & Sankalpa
Bathe in the morning, wear clean clothes and take the vow to fast until the next morning, taking only fruit, milk or water.

Evening Abhishek
After sunset, bathe the Shiva Linga with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee, and offer bilva leaves, white flowers and bhasma.

Nishita Kaal Puja
Around midnight, the heart of the vrat, repeat the abhishek and chant the Panchakshari mantra or the Shiva Chalisa; many keep a vigil through all four prahars of the night.

Morning Parana
Break the fast after sunrise the next day, once the Chaturdashi tithi has ended, with a simple satvik meal.

Chant 108 times at each of the four prahars of the night, or at least during the Nishita Kaal puja.
