The story behind Deepawali (Diwali) & Mahalakshmi Puja

Deepawali is the supreme festival of lights, celebrating the return of Lord Sri Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, and the worship of Goddess Mahalakshmi (spiritual and material abundance) with Lord Ganesha (remover of obstacles). Lighting clay lamps (Diyas) signifies lighting the inner lamp of divine awareness, dispelling all internal darkness, depression, and scarcity.

    Pradosh Kaal Preparation

    Clean and decorate the home entrance with Rangoli, Toran, and mango leaves to welcome Goddess Lakshmi during twilight.

    Ganesha & Lakshmi Puja

    During the auspicious Pradosh / Sthira Lagna muhurta, perform Puja of Sri Ganesha and Mahalakshmi with kamal (lotus) flowers, kheer, and coins.

    Deepa Prajwala (Lighting Diyas)

    Light 11, 21, or 51 sesame oil or ghee clay lamps (Diyas) around the altar, entrance, windows, and courtyard.

    Shanti & Prosperity Prayer

    Chant the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam and offer prasad to family, elders, and neighbors, praying for universal abundance.

Meaning

I salute the divine lamp light that brings auspiciousness, health, wealth, and destroys inimical thoughts. Salutations to Goddess Mahalakshmi.

Chant 11 or 108 times during the evening Lakshmi Puja while lighting the central अखंड दीप (Akhanda Diya).
