🙏 Surya Dev & Chhathi Maiya

Chhath Puja

🗓️ Kartik Shukla Shashthi (Oct–Nov)

The story behind Chhath Puja

Chhath is the four-day observance of Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, given to Surya and to Chhathi Maiya. Its central act is unusual: the first arghya is offered to the setting sun, and only the next morning to the rising one — gratitude to the light as it goes, before petition to it as it returns. The vratis, most of them women, keep a waterless fast of roughly thirty-six hours and stand in the river to make the offering. There is no priest and no murti; the observance is performed directly.

Chhath Puja Puja Vidhi

  1. 1

    Nahay Khay

On the first day bathe in a river, clean the house, and eat a single sattvik meal of kaddu-bhat cooked without onion or garlic.

  2. 2

    Kharna

On the second day fast through the day and break it after sunset with kheer of jaggery and roti; the waterless fast begins from this moment.

  3. 3

    Sandhya Arghya

On the third evening stand in the water and offer arghya to the setting sun from a soop of thekua, sugarcane and seasonal fruit.

  4. 4

    Usha Arghya & Parana

On the fourth dawn offer arghya to the rising sun, then break the fast with the prasad and distribute it.

Dates are computed with the Drik (observational) method from real solar and lunar positions, using sunrise-to-sunrise Tithi assignment for New Delhi.

Does Chhath Puja fall on the same date everywhere?

Chhath Puja's date is decided by the astrological marker that is checked at sunrise. Sunrise happens at a different moment in each city, so Chhath Puja can fall on different calendar dates in different countries, even though everyone is observing the same astronomical event.

LondonSun 15 November

SydneySun 15 November

These dates follow the panchang convention computed for each city's own coordinates — they are not a universal verdict. Some temples and communities shift observance to a weekend regardless of the computed date, and published panchang authorities recommend using your own city's panchang rather than a single worldwide date. Confirm with your local temple or community before treating a date as final.

Chhath Puja FAQs

Chhath Puja falls on 15 November 2026, based on Kaala's Drik Panchang calculation for the corresponding Tithi.

Chhath Puja is dated according to the lunar Tithi, not the fixed Gregorian calendar, so its Gregorian date shifts from year to year while its position in the lunar calendar stays consistent.

The astronomical event Chhath Puja marks happens at the same instant everywhere in the world, but which calendar day that instant falls on locally depends on each city's own timing — so cities in different countries can observe Chhath Puja a day apart.
