Karva Chauth

🗓️ Kartik Krishna Chaturthi (Oct–Nov)

The story behind Karva Chauth

Karva Chauth is kept on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, when married women observe a waterless fast from before dawn until moonrise for the long life of their husbands. The day begins with sargi, the pre-dawn meal sent by the mother-in-law. In the evening women gather to hear the katha and pass the karva — the clay pot the vrat is named for — in a circle. The fast is broken only after the moon is sighted through a sieve.

Karva Chauth Puja Vidhi

  1. 1

    Sargi & Sankalpa

Eat the sargi before sunrise — traditionally fruit, feni and sweets sent by the mother-in-law — and take the sankalpa of the nirjala fast.

  2. 2

    Gauri-Shiva Puja

In the evening install Maa Gauri, Bhagwan Shiva and Ganesha, and offer sindoor, bangles, flowers and a lit deep.

  3. 3

    Katha & Karva Pheri

Gather with other observers, listen to the Karva Chauth katha, and pass the filled karva around the circle as the tradition prescribes.

  4. 4

    Chandra Darshan & Parana

At moonrise view the moon through a sieve, offer arghya of water, then look at the husband through the same sieve and break the fast with water from his hand.

ॐ गौर्यै नमः॥

Meaning

Salutations to Maa Gauri, invoked for the wellbeing and long life of the household.

Dates are computed with the Drik (observational) method from real solar and lunar positions, using sunrise-to-sunrise Tithi assignment for New Delhi.

Does Karva Chauth fall on the same date everywhere?

Karva Chauth's date is decided by the astrological marker that is checked at sunrise. Sunrise happens at a different moment in each city, so Karva Chauth can fall on different calendar dates in different countries, even though everyone is observing the same astronomical event.

CityDate
New DelhiThu, 29 October
New YorkThu, October 29
LondonThu 29 October
TorontoThu, October 29
SydneyThu 29 October
DubaiThu, 29 October
SingaporeThu, 29 October

These dates follow the panchang convention computed for each city's own coordinates — they are not a universal verdict. Some temples and communities shift observance to a weekend regardless of the computed date, and published panchang authorities recommend using your own city's panchang rather than a single worldwide date. Confirm with your local temple or community before treating a date as final.

Karva Chauth FAQs

Karva Chauth falls on 29 October 2026, based on Kaala's Drik Panchang calculation for the corresponding Tithi.

Karva Chauth is dated according to the lunar Tithi, not the fixed Gregorian calendar, so its Gregorian date shifts from year to year while its position in the lunar calendar stays consistent.

The astronomical event Karva Chauth marks happens at the same instant everywhere in the world, but which calendar day that instant falls on locally depends on each city's own timing — so cities in different countries can observe Karva Chauth a day apart.
