The story behind Cheti Chand (Sindhi New Year)

Cheti Chand opens the Sindhi new year in the month of Chet, and is kept as the appearance day of Bhagwan Jhulelal, the Ishta Dev of the Sindhi community, revered as an incarnation of Varuna, lord of the waters. The community observed it on the Indus; after 1947 it travelled with them, and it is now kept largely in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Water is central to the observance — the Behrana Sahib, a float carrying a lamp, is taken in procession and immersed in a river or the sea.

    Snana & Sankalpa

    Bathe before sunrise and take the new year's sankalpa, traditionally at a riverbank or other flowing water where one is near.

    Behrana Sahib

    Prepare the Behrana Sahib — a vessel carrying a lit lamp, misri, cardamom, fruit and a coconut, set on a base of dough.

    Jhulelal Puja & Palav

    Worship Bhagwan Jhulelal with the lamp lit, and recite the Palav, the community's prayer of praise to him.

    Chaliho & Visarjan

    Take the Behrana in procession with chej dance and bhajan, and immerse it in a river or the sea, then share the prasad of tahiri and rice.
