Thiruvonam (Onam)

🗓️ Thiruvonam nakshatra in the solar month of Chingam (Aug–Sep)

The story behind Thiruvonam (Onam)

Onam is Kerala's harvest festival, held on the Thiruvonam nakshatra in the month of Chingam. It welcomes the asura king Mahabali, whose reign is remembered as a time when no one was deceived and all were equal, and who was granted by Bhagwan Vamana the boon of returning to see his people once each year. The floral pookalam is laid daily for ten days, growing larger as his arrival nears, and the Onasadya is served on a plantain leaf. It is kept across communities in Kerala, not by Hindus alone.

Dates are computed with the Drik (observational) method from real solar and lunar positions, using sunrise-to-sunrise Tithi assignment for New Delhi.

Does Thiruvonam (Onam) fall on the same date everywhere?

Thiruvonam (Onam)'s date is decided by the astrological marker that is checked at sunrise. Sunrise happens at a different moment in each city, so Thiruvonam (Onam) can fall on different calendar dates in different countries, even though everyone is observing the same astronomical event.

These dates follow the panchang convention computed for each city's own coordinates — they are not a universal verdict. Some temples and communities shift observance to a weekend regardless of the computed date, and published panchang authorities recommend using your own city's panchang rather than a single worldwide date.
