The story behind Kartik Purnima (Dev Diwali)

Kartik Purnima marks Bhagwan Shiva's destruction of the three flying cities of the asura Tripurasura, for which he is called Tripurari, and the devas are said to have come down to Kashi to light lamps in thanksgiving — hence Dev Diwali, the Diwali of the gods. The same Purnima closes Chaturmas and is kept as the appearance day of Matsya, the first avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu, and as Guru Nanak Jayanti. Ghats along the Ganga are lined with lamps at dusk.

    Kartik Snana

    Bathe before sunrise in a river or with water offered to the rising sun — the last and most meritorious of the month-long Kartik snanas.

    Shiva & Vishnu Puja

    Offer bel patra and white flowers to Shiva as Tripurari, and tulsi to Vishnu, both being worshipped on this Purnima.

    Deep Daan

    Float or set lamps of ghee at a river ghat, a tulsi vrinda or a water vessel at dusk — the act the day is named for.

    Dana & Anna Daan

    Offer grain, cloth, ghee or amla to a person in need, and feed cows; charity on this Purnima is held to carry lasting merit.
